Writing

I am the author of over 40 gardening books, many translated into multiple languages and pubished internationally. My work combines horticultural accuracy with clear, accessible advice for gardeners at all levels – sometimes with a humorous touch!

English-language publishers include Dorling Kindersley (often in collaboration with the RHS), Michael O'Mara and Smith Street (Australia). I have also written for the French publisher Marabout, producing a wide range of illustrated practical books for the European mainland market. Many are available additionally in German, Dutch and Spanish, reflecting a broad international readership.

Recent titles include:

Le guide Marabout de la permaculture

I also write on Substack, where I publish opinion pieces, relections on gardens I have visited, garden history and gardening practices. All my content is free to read.

News

Whether it feels like it or not, the arrival of April means it is definitely spring now, and work in the garden can begin in earnest. Not to mention garden visiting. And you can expect to see the garden centres filling up with tasty summer bedding and tender perennials for your summer containers. I’m starting to go further afield now, with a much looked forward to return to Cleethorpes towards the end of the month.
